The district operates eight elementary schools, two middle schools and one high school, maintaining a student-teacher ratio of 21:1. With a strong economy and quality schools, Portage is practical, but what makes the city so livable is the variety of recreational activities available. Chicago, close enough for a day trip, provides museums, performing arts, fine dining, professional sports and more. Locally, residents have access to a public marina, the paved and ever-expanding Prairie-Duneland Trail and over 500 acres of parklands. Hiking and swimming are also available at the nearby Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore.
